In ongoing efforts to assure student safety, Fayetteville
State University retained RobsonWoese to study and design
fire protection upgrades for up to six dormitories on
campus housing approximately 900 students. The project
had a fixed budget and an aggressive schedule combined
with a goal to provide protection for as many buildings
as possible under these constraints. Previous estimates
indicated that three of the six buildings could be retrofit,
and would likely require additional fire pumps to boost
campus water pressure.
RW's Fire Protection/Code Consulting Group performed
the necessary flow tests and determined construction
priorities. The teams' intimate knowledge of code and
fire protection system design lead to the elimination
of a potentially costly fire pump while providing fire
protection for four buildings. Most importantly, RW
was able to achieve same day plan approval from the
North Carolina Department of Insurance to preserve the
aggressive schedule. This is typically a 35-day process.
The construction work was performed during the 2002-2003
school year, while the dormitories were occupied. No
class or examination schedules were upset, and the project
was completed within the desired timeframe.
In addition, to maintain the character of the campus
environment, the new systems were installed to minimize
the visual impact of the installation.
