The medical center complex and central Strong Memorial
Hospital consists of multiple high-rise buildings with
over 3 million square feet of space. This complex houses
the hospital, psychiatric, research, ambulatory care,
schools of medicine and dentistry, and support services.
RW investigated and analyzed the existing fire protection
water supply and municipal fire flows to the complex.
RW provided:
- Development and field administration of fire pump
and standpipe flow tests for specifying sprinkler
system and water supplies.
- Analysis of existing interior fire main system
and water supply including fire pumps, standpipe
mains, risers, controls, and zones for sprinkler
zone connection points and areas of protection .
- Integration of multiple fire pumps, interior mains
and fire department connections to serve the hospital,
and other parts of the complex.
- Established sprinkler system performance criteria
and zones for all spaces. Specified standard products
including quick response sprinklers, various lower
cost and easier retrofit piping options such as
thinner wall steel and plastic piping systems. Provided
shop and record drawing documentation requirements
to meet NFPA 13, 14, 20, 24 and insurer requirements.
- Developed priority construction phasing options
to obtain value for the established funding and
cost estimates.
